Rats damage wiring, insulation, and wood. They also spread droppings through attics and crawl spaces. Signature Home Pest treats exclusion as building them out, the same approach described on our original rodent page: inspect, repair, trap, and air-seal.
Where South Bay rats get in
- Roof flashing and tile edges
- Torn gable and soffit vent screens
- Gaps behind gutters and rotting fascia
- Pipe, cable, and dryer penetrations
- Foundation cracks and crawl space vents
- Utility lines that roof rats use like a highway
Roof rats climb. Openings above ground matter as much as the slab. We walk the exterior and the attic, not just the hatch.
What exclusion includes
- Inspection of attic, crawl space, and outside walls.
- Repairs at openings large enough for rats or mice.
- Trapping of animals still in the structure.
- Vent screens, air sealing, and follow-up as needed.
If insulation is stained or packed with nests, we pair exclusion with attic or crawl cleanup. Read signs of rats in a South Bay attic if you are still deciding whether to call.

Questions homeowners ask
How small a hole do you seal?
About a quarter inch. Mice and young rats use gaps that look too small. We check flashing, vents, pipes, fascia, and foundation cracks.
Do you trap as well as seal?
Yes. Sealing without trapping can leave animals inside. We trap remaining rats or mice as part of the exclusion plan.
